چکیده

Creep resistant alloys designed for power plant applications like thick section boiler components, steam lines, turbine rotors and turbine castings must be reliable over long periods of time in sever environments. Besides high creep strength these materials must exhibit also other properties, i.e. good corrosion and crack resistance as well as good weldability. The environmental impact and economics have forced a development of high efficiency and low emission systems of power plants. Namely, the increase in the thermal efficiency of power plant can be most effectively achieved by increasing the temperature and the pressure of steam entering the turbine. Hence, the new materials with better properties which can operate at these conditions have to be developed 1,2 .

Physcial Metallurgy and Microstructure of Superalloys

When significant resistance to loading under static, fatigue and creep conditions is required, the superalloys have emerged as the materials of choice for high temperature applications. This is particularly true when operating temperatures are beyond about 800C. This is the case for gas turbines used for (i) jet propulsion, e.g. the 100,000 lb thrust engines used for powering large two-engined ...

Lecture 14 : Creep – Resistant Steel , Case Study

Introduction Typical operating parameters for steels used in the manufacture of power plant are compared against corresponding values for nickel alloys in aeroengines, in Table 1. In both cases, the service conditions are severe. But this is especially so for steels where the service life is many decades. The degree of reliability demanded of heat resistant steels is therefore extraordinary, an...

Recent Advances in Creep Resistant Steels for Power Plant Applications

The higher steam temperatures and pressures required to achieve an increase in the thermal efficiency of fossil fuel fired power generation plant necessitate the application of steels with improved creep rupture strength. The 9% chromium steels developed during the last three decades are of great interest for components of advanced, high efficiency power plant. In this Paper, the development of...

Ferritic Alloys with Extreme Creep Resistance via Coherent Hierarchical Precipitates

There have been numerous efforts to develop creep-resistant materials strengthened by incoherent particles at high temperatures and stresses in response to future energy needs for steam turbines in thermal-power plants. However, the microstructural instability of the incoherent-particle-strengthened ferritic steels limits their application to temperatures below 900 K. Here, we report a novel fe...

Computational Design of Creep-resistant Alloys and Experimental Validation in Ferritic Superalloys

As an analogy to nickel-based superalloys, ferritic superalloys based on Fe-Al-Cr-Ni-Ti are proposed for high-temperature applications, especially for fossil-energy power systems. Integrated computational tools will be employed to investigate thermodynamic, kinetic, and meso-scale properties of the proposed alloy systems. Meanwhile, selected microstructural attributes in representative model fe...
